Updated October 2026. New for 2026: every warranty read on the maker's own US site, with one question asked of each: will it fix the bag if an airline breaks it?

So you are done with suitcases that die on the carousel.

You know the moment. The belt groans, your bag slides down the ramp, and it is limping: one wheel gone, the handle stuck at half mast, a zip that now opens itself. Airlines mishandle millions of bags a year, and when you file a claim, the reply is often the same two words. Wear and tear. It's not you, it's definitely them.

So we did what we always do: work out what actually kills a bag, then find the makers who have engineered that failure out and promise, in writing, to fix it. For luggage, that turned up a surprising villain. It is not the wheel itself. It is the warranty clause that says 'damage caused by an airline is not covered', which is how a $15 wheel turns a $400 suitcase into landfill. We read every guarantee on the brand's own site, and only a handful pass.

We do not sell anything. Every bag links to where it is sold in the US, on Amazon or direct from the maker. Some links earn Buy Me Once a small commission at no cost to you. It never affects what we recommend, and several of our favorite makers have no affiliate program at all. x Tara, founder

Before the picks, the diagnosis. We went through warranty exclusions, luggage makers' own claims data, repair guides and years of frequent-flyer grumbling. Eight things end a bag's life.

1. The zipper. Grit wears the metal slider down until the teeth stop meeting and the bag unzips behind you. Overpacking splits small coils. The fix is a big zip (size 10), a replaceable slider and a maker who will swap it. 2. The wheels. Urethane tires flat-spot, bearings seize and the plastic housings crack on curbs; this is the number one luggage repair. 3. The telescoping handle. Thin tubes bend, buttons stick, and a handle that will not go down means a bag that will not go in the overhead bin. 4. Strap and seam anchors. Shoulder straps tear out at the stitching when you load them up. 5. The fabric. Thin face fabric wears through at the corners, and PU coatings slowly break down until they go sticky and flake. Ballistic nylon, Cordura and TPU laminates last far longer. 6. The shell. Hard polycarbonate cases can crack after a hard drop; aluminum dents instead. 7. Buckles. Cheap plastic snaps in the cold. 8. The warranty that walks away. Airlines are supposed to pay for broken wheels, handles and zips (the US DOT told them so in 2015), but many still call it wear and tear, and many luggage warranties exclude airline damage too. That leaves you with nobody to fix it.

Equation of the year: wheels + baggage handlers + 'airline damage excluded' = landfill. Below are the makers that break that equation.

Wheeled luggage: carry-on and checked

Winner: Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential 22" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

Briggs & Riley Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential 22" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Here is the sentence every other luggage brand avoids writing: if an airline breaks it, Briggs & Riley will fix it free, for life, with no receipt. The guarantee covers every functional part, and the parts that usually kill a roller are designed to be swapped. Spinner wheels, feet, corner guards, carry handles and zipper pulls are sold as $15 kits you fit at home. The ballistic nylon shrugs off belts and baggage carts, and the aluminum handle runs outside the packing space.

The weakest link it solves: Wheels, handles and airline damage: the three things that turn a suitcase into landfill.

Worth knowing: You pay to ship it in; they pay to send it back, and authorized repair centers can save the postage. Cosmetic scuffs are not covered. The CX expansion squashes back down after you unpack the souvenirs. Briggs does not say where Baseline is made, so neither can we. Want hardside? The Sympatico polycarbonate line carries the same guarantee.

Best checked suitcase: Briggs & Riley Baseline Medium Expandable Spinner

Briggs & Riley Briggs & Riley Baseline Medium Expandable Spinner

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
A carry-on mostly lives in your hand. A checked bag spends its life being thrown, stacked and dragged up conveyor belts by people who will never meet you. That is exactly where an airline-damage guarantee earns its keep, and why we picked the checked Baseline separately. Same ballistic nylon, same $15 user-fit wheel kits for the larger checked spinners, same promise to repair it for life without asking for a receipt.

The weakest link it solves: Baggage-hall damage to wheels, handles and seams, the claims airlines most like to call 'wear and tear'.

Worth knowing: You can still claim from the airline first if you want compensation; Briggs suggests filing before you leave the airport. Briggs will repair it either way. Also made as Compact 24" and Large; the medium is the sensible one-week size.

Best value carry-on: Travelpro Platinum Elite 21" Expandable Carry-On Spinner

Travelpro Travelpro Platinum Elite 21" Expandable Carry-On Spinner

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Travelpro was founded by a pilot, and around 220,000 aviation professionals still drag its bags through airports for a living. On the Platinum Elite line the warranty covers wheels, zippers and both handles for life, and the Trusted Companion Promise pays for airline damage repairs and the shipping to get it there for as long as you own it. That is the Briggs promise, minus a few conditions, for roughly half the price.

The weakest link it solves: Wheels, zippers and handles, plus airline damage, covered for the original owner.

Worth knowing: Register it within 120 days or the airline cover does not switch on: do it in the parking lot. Only the original buyer or gift recipient is covered, so it does not pass on secondhand. Travelpro does not sell DIY parts the way Briggs does, and it does not say where the bag is made.

Backpacks: everyday and travel

A backpack has no wheels and no handle tubes, which removes roughly a third of what kills luggage. What is left is zippers, straps and fabric, and here the best warranties go much further than any suitcase brand: two of them cover damage of any kind, and one covers you simply wearing it out.

Highly commended: Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack (Fairview 40 for women)

Osprey Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack (Fairview 40 for women)

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
The cleverest way to beat broken wheels and bent handles is to own neither. The Farpoint 40 is a carry-on sized backpack that unzips like a suitcase, with a stowable harness and hip belt for check-in. Then comes the All Mighty Guarantee: any damage or defect, from any year, repaired free, replaced if they cannot fix it, and shipped back to you at their cost. No time limit, no receipt, no interrogation about how it happened.

The weakest link it solves: Zippers, buckles and strap anchors, the parts that end most backpacks, all repaired for free whatever caused the damage.

Worth knowing: You pay postage to Osprey and repairs can take weeks, so do not send it the week before a trip. Cosmetic wear and dirty bags are excluded (wash it first). Osprey does not name airline damage, but 'any damage' is the wording. Made in Vietnam. The fabric is a lighter recycled nylon than the ballistic bags here, which is why the warranty matters.

Best everyday backpack: GORUCK GR1 USA, 26L

GORUCK GORUCK GR1 USA, 26L

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Most warranties end exactly where your use begins: 'normal wear and tear excluded'. GORUCK's covers you wearing it out. The GR1 is built from 1000 denier Cordura with YKK zippers and a reinforced laptop compartment, sewn in the USA, and tested by people who carry bricks in it for fun. It opens flat like a suitcase and fits under an airline seat. It scored highest of anything we looked at.

The weakest link it solves: Fabric wear, zippers and strap anchors, with wear itself covered rather than excluded.

Worth knowing: It is heavy for its size and stiff until broken in; this is a brick of a bag. Make sure the listing says GR1 USA. The 21L is the slimmer everyday size; the 26L is the one-bag weekend size. Sold direct.

Best made in USA travel bag: Red Oxx Air Boss

Red Oxx Red Oxx Air Boss

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Sewn in Billings, Montana from American-made materials, the Air Boss is the cult one-bag traveler's carry-on: three compartments, no wheels, no handle tubes, nothing to snap. The zippers are size 10 YKK Vislon, the chunky molded-tooth kind that shrugs off grit, sewn with heavy Tex 90 bonded nylon thread. And the No Bull warranty fixes holes, tears, seams and broken zippers for the life of the bag. Holes and tears are exactly what other warranties call 'wear'.

The weakest link it solves: Zippers, seams and fabric tears, the failures most brands exclude as wear.

Worth knowing: Delamination of the coating and improper cleaning are excluded, so wipe it, never machine-wash it. Red Oxx will replace a bag once. The shoulder strap is the only real comfort; for long walks a backpack is kinder. Sold direct only.

Best budget daypack: Osprey Daylite Plus 20L

Osprey Osprey Daylite Plus 20L

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
The cheapest way we found to own a backpack for life. The Daylite Plus is a plain, comfortable 20 liter daypack for commuting, school or a summit, and it carries exactly the same All Mighty Guarantee as Osprey's most expensive packs: any damage or defect, any year, repaired free or replaced. It also clips onto several larger Osprey packs as a detachable day bag, so it earns its place on trips too.

The weakest link it solves: Zippers, buckles and straps, all repaired free whatever happened to them.

Worth knowing: The fabric is light, so expect to use the guarantee eventually; that is the point. You pay postage in. Check the current model on Osprey's site before you buy.

Best heritage canvas pack: Duluth Pack Scout Pack

Duluth Pack Duluth Pack Scout Pack

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Can't break a zipper that isn't there. The Scout closes with an envelope flap and two roller buckles, which Duluth Pack guarantees for life, and the main stress points are riveted leather on 15 ounce canvas. Duluth Pack has been hand-making bags in Duluth, Minnesota since 1882 and still runs its own repair shop. It is the pack your grandkids will fight over.

The weakest link it solves: Zipper failure, designed out, plus hardware and seam failure guaranteed for life.

Worth knowing: Holes, rips and fading from use are not covered, though the repair shop will fix them for a fee. Canvas is not waterproof unless you choose waxed. It is a simple sack with a small inside pocket, not a laptop organizer.

Best budget school backpack: JanSport Big Student

JanSport JanSport Big Student

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Kids are the ultimate durability test, and a cheap backpack that gets lost on a bus is a different calculation from a premium one. JanSport has been repairing packs since 1967 and still runs a warranty center that fixes manufacturing defects free for the lifetime of the product. The Big Student has two big compartments and a laptop sleeve, and it is the one families keep recommending to us.

The weakest link it solves: Seam and strap defects, repaired free; wear is not.

Worth knowing: Be clear-eyed: this is a defects warranty, not a forever one. Worn zippers and normal wear are excluded, and you need a photo of the style tag. If your child is hard on bags, the Osprey Daylite Plus covers any damage.

Duffels

Best duffel: Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L

Patagonia Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L

Why it is a Buy Me Once pick:
Most cheap duffels rely on a PU coating for weatherproofing, and PU slowly breaks down with time and humidity until it goes sticky and flakes off. The Black Hole uses a TPU film laminated to 900 denier recycled polyester ripstop, a tougher, more stable barrier. It has backpack straps for the walk from the car rental, packs into its own pocket, and is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified factory.

The weakest link it solves: Fabric abrasion and coating breakdown, the slow death of every gym and road-trip bag.

Worth knowing: Ironclad covers anything that does not perform; normal wear is repaired for a reasonable charge, not free. Made in Vietnam. 55L is the carry-on-ish size; 40L and 70L also exist. Not sold by Patagonia on Amazon, so buy direct or from an outdoor shop.

And hardside suitcases?

We looked hard and could not find a polycarbonate spinner we would call buy-it-for-life on its own merits: the shell is the part that cracks, and most warranties exclude the airline damage that cracks it. If you want hardside anyway, buy it from a maker whose guarantee covers airline damage. Briggs & Riley's Sympatico line carries the same lifetime Simple As That promise as the winner. Away now repairs travel damage free for five years, then for a fee. RIMOWA guarantees 'all functional aspects' of its suitcases for life (bought from 25 July 2022) and its aluminum dents rather than cracks, but its guarantee page does not say whether airline damage counts, so ask before you buy.

Looking after a bag you plan to keep for 30 years

Clean your zippers. Brush out grit and rinse the coil with soapy water a couple of times a year; skip wet lubricants like WD-40, which attract dirt. A failing zip usually needs only a new slider, not a new bag. Do not overstuff. If you are kneeling on it to close it, the zip is doing the job of a bigger bag. Retract the handle and lock it before you check a bag, and pull it straight up, not at an angle. Photograph your bag at check-in and file any airline damage claim before you leave the airport; many airlines want damage reported within 24 hours, and you can still let the maker repair it afterwards. Store it dry and out of the sun. Heat and humidity are what break down coatings. Wash before you send it in. Osprey and Cotopaxi both return dirty bags unrepaired. Keep the product tag photo and register it. Travelpro's airline cover only switches on if you register within 120 days.

Your questions, answered

Which luggage brand has the best warranty?

For wheeled luggage, Briggs & Riley. Its Simple As That guarantee repairs every functional part of the bag for life, including airline damage, with no proof of purchase, and it sells $15 DIY kits for wheels, feet and handles. Travelpro's Platinum Elite line comes closest, covering airline damage repairs for the original owner if you register within 120 days. For backpacks, GORUCK's Scars guarantee covers you wearing the bag out, and Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee repairs any damage or defect from any year.

Does Briggs & Riley really cover airline damage?

Yes. Its guarantee page says that if your bag is damaged by an airline you can file a claim with the carrier, but if you choose not to and want Briggs & Riley to repair it, 'we will be happy to do so at no charge.' You pay to ship the bag in and they pay to ship it back, or you can use an authorized repair center or fit a DIY kit yourself. Cosmetic scuffs, dents and stains are not covered.

Are airlines responsible for broken luggage wheels and handles?

In the US, yes, in most cases. In 2015 the Department of Transportation reminded airlines that they must compensate passengers for damage to wheels, straps, zippers, handles and other protruding parts beyond normal wear and tear. Airlines still often reject these claims as wear and tear. Report the damage at the airport before you leave, take photos, and keep your bag tag. If your luggage maker covers airline damage, you can skip the argument.

Is hardside or softside luggage more durable?

For longevity, good softside wins. Ballistic nylon scuffs but rarely fails outright, and torn fabric can be patched, while a cracked polycarbonate shell usually cannot be repaired. Aluminum is the most durable hardside material, but it dents, and dents are treated as cosmetic by every warranty we read. Whatever you choose, the wheels and handle matter more than the shell, and the warranty matters most of all.

What backpack brands have a lifetime warranty?

The strongest we found are GORUCK (covers wearing it out, no proof of purchase, no time limit), Osprey (any damage or defect, any era, repaired free), Red Oxx (holes, tears, seams and zippers for the life of the bag) and Duluth Pack (hardware and seams for life). JanSport, Cotopaxi and Eagle Creek offer lifetime-of-the-product warranties that cover manufacturing defects only and exclude worn zippers and normal wear. Tom Bihn repairs its own faults free and wear for a reasonable charge in its Seattle factory. L.L.Bean ended its lifetime return policy in 2018 and now offers one year.

Is Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee really for life?

For almost every pack, yes: Osprey says it will 'repair any damage or defect free of charge, whether your pack was made in 1974 or yesterday', and replace it if it cannot be repaired. You pay shipping to Osprey and they pay the return. The exceptions are the Poco child carriers (seven years) and the Soelden, Sopris Pro and Raptor Pro packs (five years). Cosmetic wear, lost items and dirty or moldy bags are excluded.

Which luggage is made in the USA?

Very little wheeled luggage is. For bags, Red Oxx sews in Billings, Montana from American-made materials, GORUCK builds the GR1 USA in the United States, Duluth Pack has made canvas packs in Duluth, Minnesota since 1882, and Tom Bihn sews many of its bags, including the Aeronaut 45, in Seattle (check each product page, as some Tom Bihn bags are made by a partner in Vietnam). Filson also makes many bags in Seattle, but its guarantee excludes airline mishandling.

How we judged these (Nerd Alert)

We did not rank on looks, weight or how many pockets fit a passport. We used the Weakest Link Method: list everything that ends a bag's life (zippers, wheels, handles, strap anchors, fabric and coatings, hard shells, buckles, and a warranty that will not fix it), weight each by how often it happens and how fatal it is, then score each bag on how far its materials, design and written guarantee eliminate that failure. Wheels and handles only count against bags that have them, so scores compare within a type. Every warranty was read on the maker's own US website, not in a roundup, and we asked one extra question of every suitcase: does it cover airline damage? Prices are not shown because they change daily; click through for today's. If a bag on this list fails you, tell us at contact@buymeonce.com. Our recommendations change when the evidence does.
