Smithey Carbon Steel Farmhouse Skillet, 12 inch by Smithey Ironware
The Buy Me Once Verdict
Hand forged by an artisan blacksmith in Charleston, South Carolina, in the style of 18th and 19th century American farmhouse pans. Each one is a little different. Carbon steel cooks much like cast iron at a lighter weight: a 12 inch skillet at about 5 lb.
Why it lasts: a single piece of forged steel with a handle inspired by traditional fire tools. It takes the same care as cast iron, and like cast iron its seasoning can always be stripped and rebuilt.
The guarantee, in Smithey's words: "If your Smithey is defective, we'll replace it. If it fails you after honest and normal use, we'll repair or replace it." Smithey also runs a paid factory restoration service that strips old seasoning, removes rust, smooths the surface if needed and re-seasons the piece, so a neglected pan can come back instead of going in the trash.
