Anglepoise

Anglepoise lamps have been a fixture on desks since George Carwardine designed the first sprung-arm model in 1932. The constant-tension spring mechanism lets the lamp hold any position without a clamp or screw, and the construction is almost entirely metal, so parts can be replaced rather than the whole lamp thrown away. Current models are made with a lifetime guarantee, which is rare in lighting.
