The knife your grandfather probably still has. A thick 420HC blade with Buck's own heat treatment, a lockback that has barely changed since 1964, brass bolsters and ebony, stamped USA on the blade. When the edge gets tired Buck will sharpen and tune it for $6.95 including return postage, and if you snap the blade they will fit a new one for $10. That is a parts program, not a slogan.

The weakest link it solves: Dull and damaged blades, fixed cheaply by the maker for life, and no pocket clip to snap.
